The History

Eastern massage has a long history.

First thought to have been practiced some 5,000 years ago in China and from those early beginnings it was the Egyptians who developed Reflexology around 2,500 BC.

The Chinese started using needles at the time of Christ and acupuncture was born. The accurately positioned needles can be used to relieve pain as well as repositioning the body's internal wellbeing.

The Romans used massage as part of their medical treatment. It is said that Julius Caesar had his physicians massage him to relieve his neuralgia and epileptic seizures. Gladiators were 'rubbed down' to free the muscles before contests.

In 1895 Sigmund Freud is known to have used massage therapy to treat hysteria, and in 1899 massage was formally recognised here and a dedicated department was opened at St. George's Hospital in London.

Today

Today, massage is well respected and the words 'alternative therapy' hardly used.

As well as soothing muscles, massage therapy improves circulation by bringing oxygen and other nutrients to body tissue.

(This is partly done anyway albeit subconsciously - rubbing the hands together when they are cold, stamping the feet repeatedly "to get the legs moving" and scratching the head! - all aiding blood circulation)

Massage relieves muscle tension and increases flexibility and mobility. It also helps clear lactic acid and other waste within the body, reducing pain and stiffness in muscles and joints.

The Therapist

The massage therapist at the Centre is a Chinese lady who has brought her skills from her home. In many cases, these skills have been handed down through the family. Formal we

Formal Western tuition was received at the 'Delicate Touch' Massage School in Scotland so her work can be recognised and covered by appropriate insurance in the UK.
